Do HVAC technicians need EPA certification?

Yes. Federal law requires certification for technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants. The credential never expires. Supervised apprentices are the one exception under EPA rules. Licensing boards and commercial clients may ask for proof of certification alongside your insurance documents.
